Supporting County and Local Government
As Douglas County’s chief legal advisor, the County Attorney plays a vital role in guiding county operations and protecting public interests. This includes providing legal counsel to the Board of Commissioners and department heads, reviewing contracts and transactions, representing the county in civil matters, and ensuring compliance across areas like property, human services, environmental enforcement, and more. Stephen Knudsen’s two decades of broad legal experience in Alexandria make him ideally suited to deliver reliable, practical support that strengthens county government and serves our community effectively.
Protecting Families and Children
Protecting vulnerable children and ensuring families receive the support they need is a core duty of the Douglas County Attorney. This includes prosecuting Child in Need of Protection or Services (CHIPS) cases for abused or neglected children, pursuing guardianships and conservatorships, and addressing truancy and runaway petitions to keep kids safe and in school.
